How much toilet paper do you need for a hurricane?
Most of my neighbors are stocking up on necessities in preparation for hurricane Dorian. Some of them are going to extremes.
This morning, at the local Publix, I passed a woman pushing a shopping cart full of toilet paper; and pulling another full cart of toilet paper behind her. Looking around, I noticed that a lot of people were buying multiple packs of toilet paper. What, exactly, are they expecting?
It is always good to stock up on bottled water. I left with the water, beer, some tortilla chips, salsa, bacon, and hot dogs. My wife made me go back.

In times like these, I’m preparing as much as I can. I lived through the 2004 and 2005 seasons. I want to be really prepared this time.

Pre-Harvey, my local Kroger was pretty picked over:
Plenty of onions if your needed those though. I realized shortly before the storm that I didn’t actually have much non perishable food that didn’t need to be cooked, so had to grab whatever odds and ends were left. Got just enough to hold me over until stores started reopening a few days after the storm. In an oversight, I didn’t notice that I was low on dog food as well, but luckily I was able to get more before that ran out.

Yes, the shelves at our local Publix and Winn- Dixie get pretty bare before hurricanes. Since the hurricanes of 2016 and 2017, however, Publix stocks massive supplies of bottled water.

they are expecting to have to handle a situation of panic which they are self sustaining
they are buying lots of TP because other people are buying lots of TP which results in a shortage during and following an event.

You are exactly right - there is a shortage of toilet paper just after a hurricane, and hoarding is likely the reason. We have 24 rolls which, to me, seems more than enough. I guess some peop le are extremely paranoid about being caught short.

When there’s a big snow storm around my parts people do a lot of what I like to call “French Toast Shopping” the standard eggs, milk and bread.

Not THAT much. We always focus on water, fuel, and canned goods. Fuel includes fuel for the generator, grill, and the camping stove. We were off-grid for two weeks when Gustav hit Louisiana . That was a just a couple of months after we moved here. Crash course in hurricane preparedness!

Just get a months worth of canned food, keeps for years so you don’t really have to worry about restocking. I have a months worth so I just have to make sure I have enough milk for my coffee when we get heavy snow storms.

The nice thing is that TP doesn’t go bad. So even if you over buy, you can’t go wrong.

some people just use far too much TP!
other though, don’t use enough...
Kochanski : So you’re missing Rimmer?
Lister : Had a dream about him, he was all smiles and jokes... and stuff.
Kochanski : I thought you guys didn’t get on.
Lister : We didn’t that’s what’s so weird. His tightness drove me crazy, the way he always used to eat his food in alphabetical order, the way he only ever used three pieces of toilet paper, one up, one down, one to polish.
Kochanski : Did he have any redeeming features?
Lister : No. Well, yeah, sometimes he went out the room.

I have always though about the h urricane parties. Just about the time you get shit hammered does the roof blow off? I would be so nervous that drunk in an emergency situation would not work out well.
I wish you guy the best. At least you should have a really long Labor Day break from work.

Baby wipes are a better idea. Considering people will need to be flushing tp down the toilet. What happens if the water is out and you can’t do that?
Plus, they just feel amazing.

We always buy another pack of 24 rolls when we get down to the last six.
But if I lived in a known hurricane or tornado, I’s always have two packs of 24 rolls, several five/ten litre water containers plus 24 litre size bottles of water, tinned meat, tinned veg, tinned fruit, comprehensive first aid kit, torches, various batteries, solar and wind up equipment.
In the event I may not be just providing for me but for neighbours too.

We also focus on the essentials. Our generator will power the refrigerator and let us keep the phones and computers charged. The propane grill works for cooking, so all we really miss is air conditioning.

Some people did that with ice during the last hurricane. All of the stores were out, and one guy was selling it for $5.00 a bag out of the back of his pickup. He probably made a couple of hundred dollars - really just chump change when you consider it.

Most of the houses around here are built out of cement block, and they are not going anywhere. The roof is a different story. We got a special discount on our homeowner’s insurance because of the way that our roof is attached. Something that surprised me is that, on some houses, the roof is not really attached at all. They just use a few nails to hold it in place, and the weight keeps it on.
Yes, we will likely have a hurricane party, unless we are in the direct path of something category 3 or greater.

Actually, most people keep their bathtubs full of water with a bucket close by . If the water stops, and you cannot flush, just pour a bucket of water down the toilet.
I do see your point about baby wipes.

Yes, that sounds like our supply - lots of water, batteries, and non-perishable items. We also have a small generator for the refrigerator and a propane stove, so cooking is not really much of a problem.
You mentioned the neighbors and, yes, there are some who go into this totally unprepared.

Oh yeah, I forgot, one other very important thing is to have cash on hand. When the power goes out, some stores stay open on generator power, but they are not connected to Internet. It is cash- only. Also, i f you have fallen trees, crews will be driving around working for cash-only. They charge a little more than normal, but not terrible, considering the hazards.
